Acropolis & Ancient Agora Walking Tour Itinerary
From Acropolis to Ancient Agora you will walk in the footsteps of ancient and modern Greeks with a local, licensed English speaking Tour Guide. In this Group Tour we visit Athens’ most significant sites and it is perfect for first-time visitors who want to gain a deeper understanding of the strategic position of Acropolis in Athens; the history and its role in Greek culture.
Meeting Point: Inside Acropolis Metro Station, next to the info desk, please see image attached. Your Tour Guide will be holding an Athens Walking Guide Sign.
You will start your tour inside the Acropolis metro station exploring the daily life of Ancient Athens through the displays of artifacts and casts of the “Parthenon marbles”. Then we take a nice short walk in the pedestrian streets of Makrigianni and Dionysus Areopagitou, nearby Plaka and the new Acropolis Museum, meeting the locals.
Athens Walking Guide enters inside Acropolis from the main entrance and guide you inside Acropolis sharing his in depth knowledge of the Propylaia, the “Nike” Temple, the Parthenon, the Erectheion and all the monuments that are mentioned in our list (the Beule Gate,the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Observatory, the Philopappos monument, the Mars and Pnyx Hills, the Sanctuary of Dionysus, which the great writers Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles performed their dramatic plays back in the 5th century B.C. We will finish the first part of the tour in the viewpoint of Acropolis and you will have free time (up to 20 minutes) to explore the hill on your own (washroom available).
The Ancient Agora tour
After your free time break, we meet in the official exit of Acropolis (Your Athens Walking Guide will show you the way) and we will continue our walking tour towards Ancient Agora. The ancient agora is the cradle of ancient democracy with a marvelous museum of the ancient history in the reconstructed Stoa of Attalus by the money of the sponsor Rockefeller back in the 1950’s. Inside the Agora (marketplace) we will see a church of the 11th century A.D., the Panathenian way, the palace of the giants and the Temple of Hephaestus.
At last we will walk towards the modern historical city of Athens, Monastiraki square and Plaka area where you can have you lunch.
The tour finishes in Monastiraki area , Monastiraki area is a safe area of Athens which lies in the shadow of the Acropolis with easy access to taxi’s and Metro Station.
