Acropolis & Ancient Agora Tour
In this tour we guide you through the most important cultural sites of classical Athens, the Acropolis of Athens, the Sanctuary of Dionysus, the Ancient Agora, that the American School of Classical studies did the excavation back in the beginning of the 20th century and we finish at the modern historical parts of Athens, Plaka and Monastiraki, that you can have your lunch.
A.W.G. meeting point is going to be inside Acropolis Metro Station next to the validation tickets machines on the upper floor holding a sign with the logo Athens Walking Guide.
We start our tour inside the Acropolis metro station exploring the daily life of Ancient Athens through the displays of artifacts and casts of the “Parthenon marbles”. The majority of the subway stations in Athens have small exhibitions of archaeological artifacts that came to light during the construction of it. Then we take a nice short walk in the pedestrian streets of Makrigianni and Dionysus Areopagitou, nearby Plaka and the new Acropolis Museum, meeting with the locals.
Athens Walking Guide enters inside Acropolis from the south slope to avoid the crowds and there we will rediscover the sanctuary of Dionysus, which the great writers Aeschylus, Euripides and Sophocles performed their dramatic plays back in the 5th century B.C. In our way up to Acropolis, we are stopping under the shady place of Asclepius Sanctuary, adoring the breathtaking view of Athens and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Philopappos monument.
Your Acropolis guided tour
A.W.G. will guide you and share his and your knowledge of the Propylaia, the “Nike” Temple, the Parthenon, the Erectheion and all the monuments that are mentioned in our list (the Beule Gate, the Observatory, the Philopappos, the Mars and Pnyx Hills). We will finish the first part of the tour in the viewpoint of Acropolis. You will have free time (up to thirty minutes) to explore the hill on your own (washroom stop also).
The Ancient Agora tour
We meet in the official exit of Acropolis (A.W.G. will show you the way) and we continue our walking tour towards Ancient Agora. The ancient agora is the cradle of ancient democracy with a marvelous museum of the ancient history in the reconstructed Stoa of Attalus by the money of the sponsor Rockefeller back in the 1950s. Inside the Agora (marketplace) we will see a church of the 11th century A.D., the Panathenian way, the palace of the giants and the temple of Hephaestus. At last we will walk towards the modern historical city of Athens, Monastiraki square and Plaka area, that you will can have you lunch break.
