Join us for Athens Byzantine Walk Tour

In this tour we provide the best introduction of Athens in Byzantine Times (330 AC -1453 AC) and guide you through the most important cultural sites of Byzantine Athens.

A.W.G. meeting point is outside Thisseion railway Station and we will be waiting for you holding a sign with the logo of Athens Walking Guide.

Our itinerary:

Athens Byzantine Walk Tours start by taking around the travellers the beautiful restored small churches of the 11th century and so on. These churches have withstood the ravages of time and the interventions of man and they constitute the sole complete architectural landmarks of Byzantine Athens. On foot also we rediscover the neighbourhoods of this period and we find traces of the Byzantine culture until nowadays through tasting and we explore and learn how Byzantine Empire came to rule a big part of Eastern Europe during the Middle Ages and formed the destination of modern Europe. In the last part of the tour we walk central street of modern Athens and finish the tour in the greater area of Plaka.

In this tour find out how the topography of Athens was influenced by the needs of Christianity. Not only were churches built, but from the mid-fifth century, many ancient temples were converted into Christian churches. The Parthenon became the church of the Virgin of Athens while the Temple of Hephaestus inside the ancient Agora was dedicated to St. George.

Have on mind that the streets between neighbourhoods that Athens Walking Guide chooses  to walk with the travellers follow the ancient road network which has been kept, to some degree, in the modern city too.

Travellers may also want to update their tour and by a nice walk through the National Gardens and Queen’s Olga blessing, the patroness of the Christian Art at the end of the 19th century, can visit the Byzantine and Christian Museum of Athens to enjoy a guided tour.

A visit at  Byzantine and Christian Museum, which is based in Athens, one of Greece’s national museums includes collections with religious artifacts of the Early Christian, Byzantine, Medieval, post-Byzantine and later periods which it exhibits, but also acquires, receives, preserves, conserves, records, documents, researches, studies, publishes and raises awareness of. The museum has over 25,000 artefacts in its possession. The artifacts date from between the 3rd and 20th century AD, and their provenance encompasses the entire Greek world, as well as regions in which Hellenism flourished. The size and range of the collections and value of the exhibits makes the Museum a veritable treasury of Byzantine and post-Byzantine art and culture.

Made for visitors with special interest in Byzantine Art and Culture and Medieval History.
